The sitter Charles Louis Comte de (in Austria: Karl Ludwig Count von) Raigecourt (1766-1841; see our image nr.8) was a captain of the French Royal Allemand Regiment. In 1784 he married Louise de Causans, "dame pour accompagner" of Mme Elisabeth de France. During the French Revolution he emigrated to Austria and served in Imperial Army wherein 1812 was promoted to Major-General. During the reign of Louis XVIII Raigecourt was appointed the first "Pair de France".
>br>This miniature was made after 1821 - the sitter already bears neck cross of Order of St.Fernand and of Merit (Kingdom of Naples and Two Sicilies; awarded in 1821 - see our image nr.8). An unsigned replica of this miniature (also with the sitter's name on verso) was offered on May 14, 1991 at Christie's Geneva (Lot 112, "Austrian School ca 1815").
