In his younger years he was a student and later close friend of the famous Biedermeier painter Peter Fendi. His other teachers were Ferdinand Georg Waldmueller and Friedrich von Amerling in Vienna as well as Moritz von Schwind in Munich. From 1837 on the artist exhibited at the Vienna Academy.
