Three miniatures with portraits of the privy councillor Friedrich Khuen (Khün), his wife Emilie Khuen, nee Bier, and of their two sons Karl and Emil.
It was painted in 1833 in the famous Bohemian health resort Carlsbad (today Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) by a very well-known German portrait miniaturist of the 19th century Johann Michael Holder. The portraits of the mother and children are titled on versos; the portrait of the father bears an authentic old inscription on verso, which reads (as translated from German): "In Carlsbad: painted by Wuerttemberg Court Painter /Holder during a stay /in Carlsbad 1833 / Privy Councillor / Friedrich Khün".
Johann Michael Holder (1796 Hidrizheim - 1861 Stuttgart) studied in Stuttgart, Munich, Dresden, Prague and Paris, copying numerous old master paintings in miniature. For his work, Holder was made the honorary member of the Academy of Dresden. In 1836 he studied at the Academy of St. Petersburg, where he painted a portrait of his fellow-student A.J. Sauerweid and showed a portrait of the artist A. Varneck at the academic exhibition. Also in St. Petersburg, Holder produced some paintings in oil.
Amongst his sitters were royalties and statesmen (for example, King of Wuerttemberg, Minister Otto, Duke Adolf von Nassau, Prince Alexander Hohenlohe, Prince von Bayern, etc.).
