This miniature was acquired together with another one by Franz Pittner from the Estate of the Viennese family von Bene. This second one depicts our sitter at the age of 4. Franz Pittner was clearly a family friend and a first art teacher of Marianne, who herself became a good portrait miniaturist.
Franz Pitner was a renowned Austrian portrait and genre painter of the second half of the 19th century. He studied in Vienna and Rome, where he stayed during 1853-1854. He was also active in Venice. He died in 1892 in Bozen, South Tyrol, then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Italy.
