Joseph Saunders worked in London as a miniaturist and engraver. He exhibited at the Free Society of Artists and the Incorporated Society of Artists from 1772 to 1776, at the Royal Academy from 1778 to 1800, and at the British Institution in 1808. Schidlof writes about him: "...He was an excellent artist, much too little known...Certain of his miniatures have some resemblance to those of Richard Grosse". The Victoria and Albert Museum in London owns two of his miniatures (one formerly in the Pierpont Morgan Collection).
