One of the earliest works of the well known German-French artist Heinrich Schlesinger.
Heinrich (Heinrich Wilhelm; known in France as Henri Guillaume) Schlesinger was a painter of portraits and genre subjects. He was born in 1814 in Frankfurt a. M., became a naturalized Frenchman. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1893. Schlesinger studied at the Viennese Academy; was active in Vienna and Paris; lived in London in 1870-1871. He began exhibiting in 1840 at the Salon of Paris, showing his works there regularly until 1889. He was awarded with the French Order of Legion of Honour. Schlesinger's watercolour portraits and miniatures on ivory became his specialties in his earliest period. Some works stemming from this time belong to the collection of the "Vienna-Museum". Similarly, the Museum of Versailles hosts some of Schlesinger's works from his French period.
