Early and very rare self-portrait of well-known Dutch artist of the 19th century, Christiaan Kramm.
Christiaan (or Christiaen) Kramm was born in 1797 in Utrecht and died in the same town in 1875.
In 1810, at the age of 13, he began studying under Utrecht goldsmith N. van Voorst, simultaneously taking drawing lessons from Hendrik van Berneveldt. After studying for several years by van Voorst, he entered the studio of P.C. Wonder, with whom he proceeded to work between 1820-1823 on the decorations of Utrecht Theater. In 1826 he became the Director (and teacher of architectural drawing) of the Utrecht Drawing School. In the same year, together with his teacher Wonder, he undertook a study trip to England. He showed his historical and genre paintings at the Amsterdam Exhibitions of 1828 and 1831. His main specialty, however, remained portrait painting. As portraitist in Utrecht, Kramm had a large high society clientelle (his biographer, Dr. Wap, names above 300 of his portrait works). Moreover, he painted numerous portrait miniatures on silk. He was also known as a restorer of old painting.
For a long time Kramm was also active as architect, and was in 1839 appointed Chief-Architect of the Province Utrecht. In the final period of his life he also became a known art historian: he had written a Dictionary of Netherland Artists (“Levens en werken der Holandsche en Vlaamsche schilders” 1857-1864).
Our last image (nr.9) shows his portrait at the age of 44, painted by his Utrecht colleague Jean Francois Michel Mourot.
