Adam Braun (1748-1827) "Birching in girls boarding-school" oil on copper, 1789 7500 EUR
Adam Braun (1748-1827) "Birching in girls boarding-school" oil on copper, 1789
Painted in 1789, it is a very rare and curious work of the well-known Viennese genre artist Adam Braun.
Adam (Adam Johann) Braun was born in 1748 in Vienna and died in the same city in 1827. From 1762 he studied under Frister and M. van Bytens at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, becoming its member in 1789. He was a painter, engraver and graphic artist, but was especially known for his genre motifs that were often of gallant high society scenes (often painted on copper - sic!) in style of the Dutch 17th-century masters (such as Gerard Dou, Willem van Mieris, Gerard ter Borch). Additionally, Braun was active as restorer and art appraiser. His works can be seen in museums of Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, etc.
Our additional images show his works offered at the art auction market in the last years.
