The old authentic inscription on verso of the stretcher reads: Isaac Ascher /in seinem 65ten Jahr (English: at the age of 65), which contradicts the facts compiled by the sitter's biographer. The latter insists that Francolm died at the age of 61 (1788-1849). It is possible that the biographer gathered erroneous information pertaining to either the birth- or death date of this gentleman. The portrait rather seems to be painted before 1850, hence we believe that the biographer's mistake lies in establishing the wrong date of Francolm's birth.
Isaac Ascher Francolm (his full name) was a well known German-Jewish preacher and religious teacher, who was active at Jewish schools in Breslau and Koenigsberg, and was an author of numerous works of Jewish religious thematic.
P.S. One should not exclude the possibility that the aforementioned writing on stretcher was added at a later date (for instance, by sitter's heirs), and that the true mistake lies in inscription itself and not in Francolm's official biography...
