This miniature - dated "Berlin 1814" - is a very rare and important children portrait of Princess Luise of Prussia (1808-1870) and her younger brother Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1809-1872). They were the youngest of the ten children of Prussian Royal Couple - King Friedrich Wilhelm III and his wife Queen Luise. The mother died in 1810, as these siblings were, respectively, 2 and 1 years old. Our images nr.10-12 show their portraits made ca. 5-6 years later than our miniature, as well as their extensive biographies.
It is very interesting that the little prince is wearing a cross of the so-called "Ordre du Lys", which was introduced in April 1814 by the Bourbons, who regained their power in France after defeat of Napoleon. This award existed until 1830 and was from early on meant to serve as decoration for Garde Nationale de Paris (see our image nr.13). Nevertheless, not only the members of these troops were awarded in 1814; among the first recepients of this decoration were also monarchs of anti-Napoleonic allies (among them of Prussia!) and their sons.
