Johann Bardou (fl.1775-1788)-Attrib. "Semen Gavrilovich Zorich ", important pastel portrait!, ca.1780 4500 EUR - 25% DISCOUNT = 3375,00 EUR Small pastel portrait of an aristocrat with a cross of Russian Military Order of St. Georg of the 4th class. Comparison with portraits of Catherina the Great's favourite Semen Gavrilovich Zorich (1745-1799; see our images nr.6-7) convincingly confirms our painting as till today unknown portrait of this important for Russian history of 18th century person. Images nr.8-12 provide extensive biographical information. Johann P. Bardou was a German artist from Berlin, who was mentioned as working between 1775 and 1788. He probably studied under director of Berlin Academy, Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur, before moving to Warsaw in 1775. There, he became a court painter of the King Staislaw August IV. From 1780 Bardou was active in Russia. He painted portraits in pastel and watercolor (also miniatures) of various members of Polish and Russian aristocracy. Some of his works were reproduced by engravers J.F. Bause, D. Berger, etc.
It is very possible, that this portrait was made by artist in sitter's residence in Shklov (now Belorussia; see images 8-11), in 1780, on the way from Poland to St.Petersburg.
