The miniature bears on verso an old label with inscription (title): "17/III Graf Merveldt". Apart from that, the miniature's back cover bears the following inscription: "innen Name: Graf Merveldt /Offizier des K.K. Dragoner Regiment Nr. 4 1798-1802 (Chevauxlegers Reg.(iment) /N.2))". The sitter seems to be an unknown officer from Austrian Chevaulegers Regiment No.2 ("Hohenzollern", in 1798-1801 it was Light Dragoon Regiment No.4). His uniform corresponds to regulation for 1802-1806, what means he can not be mentioned in the inscription Graf Merveldt. The latter, Maximilian Count von Merveldt (1764-1839) was from 1796 Major-General.
The size of this miniature (diameter 6.5cm) serves as an indication that it was formerly mounted into the lid of a round snuffbox.
The author of this portrait was - with almost 100% possibility - very well known Viennese portraitist (and miniaturist!) Josef Kreutzinger (1757-1829). Comparison with other works of Kreutzinger in our possession convincingly supports this attribution.
Josef Kreutzinger (1757 Vienna - 1829 ibidem) studied from 1768 at the Academy of Vienna (from 1774 pupil of Fueger), and became later a very well known painter of portraits in oils and of miniatures. He worked in Vienna, where he obtained the title of "K.K.Hof-Kammermahler". In 1793, Kreutzinger visited St. Petersburg, where he remained for some time. Among the personages whose portraits he did, were many royalties and most important members of high aristocracy.
