This very rare pastel portrait was painted around 1805, when the sitter - the Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Baden (1786-1818) - was 19-20 years old. Our image nr.10 offers a clip from Wikipedia with his extensive biography.
The portrait was acquired from a noble estate in Baden-Baden, together with a portrait (similarly a pastel of virtually identical size) of the sitter's elder sister, Duchess Marie of Brunswyck (Braunschweig), nee Princess of Baden (see our web 30868).

As we strongly believe, both portraits were painted by the same artist, namely court portraitist in Brunswyck (the Prince was obviously visiting there), Johann Christian August Schwartz.
It is very likely that Schwartz copied both portraits (see our argumentation in description of the sister's portrait) after the original pair painted by his friend Johann Heinrich Schroeder. The latter frequently engaged Schwartz as assistant to help him with his numerous commissions.
Moreover, we see an old inscription on verso of this portrait: "Schroedter v.H…pinxit…".

We add also that one of sitter's sisters, Louise, became Tsarina Alexandra Fedorovna (wife of Tsar Nikolai I of Russia).

Johann Christian August Schwartz (1756 Hildesheim - 1814 Brunswyck) worked in Brunswyck (Braunschweig), Dresden, Hamburg, and exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1800. He was evidently close to Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757-1812): the attribution of works between them is complicated by the number of pastels signed by Schwartz which are in fact versions of works by Schroeder; many confusions still persist.
