Joh. Christ. Aug. Schwartz (1756-1814) "Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Baden", rare pastel portrait, ca.1810 7000 EUR This very rare pastel portrait was painted around 1805, when the sitter - the Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Baden (1786-1818) - was 19-20 years old. Our image nr.10 offers a clip from Wikipedia with his extensive biography.
Johann Christian August Schwartz (1756 Hildesheim - 1814 Brunswyck) worked in Brunswyck (Braunschweig), Dresden, Hamburg, and exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1800. He was evidently close to Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757-1812): the attribution of works between them is complicated by the number of pastels signed by Schwartz which are in fact versions of works by Schroeder; many confusions still persist. See also our web 18284 with lithograph made after this portrait.
