Anthelme Francois Lagrenée (1774-1832) "General Perruguet de Montrichard and his wife", 1803/04

A golden locket encrusted with tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl with two portrait miniatures: one of a famous Napoleonic general Joseph Helie (Elie) Desire Perruquet de Montrichard (1760-1828; he is depicted with a Chevalier-Cross of Legion d'Honneur; see our images nr.13-16 with comparisons and extensive biography) and another one of his young wife, Carolina Auguste, nee Baroness Boecklin de Boecklinsau (she was born on 28 February 1769 in Duchy Baden/Germany and married her general on 4th February 1797 in Strassburg). The first miniature is unfortunately in bad condition (possibly, due to some moisture spreading under the glass). The miniature portrait of the general's wife is clearly signed "Lagrenée" and is in relatively good condition.
Both portraits are original works of one of the most known Parisian miniaturists of Napoleon's epoch - Anthelme Francois Lagrenée - and were painted between 11 December 1803 (on this day Montrichard obtained his Chevalier-Cross of Legion dHhonneur) and 14 June 1804 (he is awarded wit Commander-Cross).
A larger replica of left miniature (general's portrait) was formerly in collection of Prince de la Moskowa in Paris (erroneously as work of Antlelme Francois' uncle, Jean Jacques Lagrenee). It was exhibited in 1912, in Bruxelles (see our image nr.13) and came again to light on 21 May 1992 at Sotheby's Geneva (lot 35; see our image nr.14)
Anthelme Francois Lagrenée was born in Paris in 1774 as a son of French painter Louis-Francois Lagrenée. He was a pupil of his father and later - of Vincent. He exhibited at the Parisian Salon from 1799 to 1831. During the revolution Lagrenée served in the French army, where he meticulously studied the anatomy of horses, thus becoming a very fine horse-draughtsman. He was also a very good portraitist (mainly miniaturist); was also very well known as a good imitator of antique cameos. In 1817-1825 the artist lived and worked in St. Petersburg where he had a great success and did portraits of numerous members of aristocracy, as well as of the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna. As a portraitist (as already mentioned) Lagrenée painted chiefly miniatures on ivory and watercolour portraits (sic!), but known are his historical and animalistic paintings in oils. Schidlof writes: "Lagrenée was an excellent miniaturist whose works show a certain influence on Isabey, but his "pointille" is finer in the faces than with the pupils of latter". Miniatures and watercolour portraits of this artist belong to collections of Louvre (Paris), Hermitage and Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), Tretyakov Gallery and Historical Museum (Moscow), etc., etc.
