Probably painted in the late 1773 - early 1774 (in September 1773 the sitter was raised to highest Russian military rank of general-field-marshal; in our portrait he is already wearing general-field-marshal's uniform), it is an extremely rare and important portrait of a remarkable Russian soldier of Catherina II's epoch, Count Zakhar Grigorievich Chernyshev (1722-1784). He appears here somewhat younger than on portrait by Alexander Roslin dated 1776 (see our image nr.6). Alike in Roslin's portrait, he is depicted (apart from wearing the same full-dress coat of general-field-marshal) with a breast-star and blue moiré sash of the Order of St. Apostle Andrew the First-Called (awarded in 1762).

Provenance: private collection, Newton Abbot, Devon / United Kingdom (as portrait of an unknown Austrian (!?) courtier).
