Extremely rare for current art market (no other work of this artist has resurfaced in the last 30 years!) miniature on ivory by well-known German artist Johann Gottlieb Baerenstecher.

According to the most recent biographical information provided by the artist dictionary "Saur", Johann (not Nicholas) Gottlieb Baerenstecher was born in 1768 in Ludwigsburg and died in 1801 and not after 1808 as in Schidlof and Thieme-Becker) in Nuremberg (he was buried in the tomb of Albrecht Duerer at the cemetery Johannesfriedhof).
He was a son of living in Ludwigsburg valet of Duke of Wuerttember who was also Director of Royal Gallery, Elias David Baerenstecher. In 1789 he began his studies at the Höhere Karlsschule in Stuttgart; then, became a pupil of Johann Gotthard Mueller at the Stuttgart Academy. In ca. 1795 he settled in Nuremberg, where he proceeded to collaborate with editor Johann Friedrich Frauenholz. In 1796 Baerenstecher became a member of the Nuremberg Union of Artists and Art Lovers. In that period he was active as engraver and portraitist. He also made copies after Old Masters (among others, after Rembrandt).
