Carl Steffeck (1818-1890) "Pug mother with her puppies", oil on canvas, ca. 1850 9000 EUR Carl (Carl Constantin Heinrich) Steffeck (1818 Berlin - 1890 Koenigsberg/Prussia) studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and in 1837 became a student of the famous Franz Krueger, called by his contemporaries "Pferde-Krueger" (in English "Horse-Krueger") for his horse paintings. From 1839 he also worked in the studio of Carl Begas. In 1839-1840 the artist lived in Paris, where he for a short time studied under Delaroche and was strongly influenced by the works of another outstanding horse painter Horace Vernet. From 1840 till 1842 Steffeck lived in Italy and thereafter permanently in Berlin. In 1859 he became a professor of the Berlin Academy, in 1860 the member of the Academies of Koenigsberg and Vienna. From 1880 he was a director of the Koenigsberg Academy.
