Small oil on wooden panel 18th-century painting, which strongly resembles works of well-known German artist Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, called Dietricy. Our additional images nr.4-9 with comparisons convincingly support this attribution.
Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, called Dietricy (1712 Weimar - 1774 Dresden) was one of the most significant German painters of the 18th century. He was a son and pupil of Johann Georg Dietrich, royal painter in Weimar. His second teacher was Alexander Thiele in Dresden. From 1733 the artist was in service of August the Strong, King of Saxonia. In 1741 he was appointed a royal painter to the court of King August III. In 1748 Dietricy became a director of the Royal Picture Gallery in Dresden. In 1764 his career of a professor of Dresden Academy began. Dietricy's works represent a typical example of moving eclecticism of his time. Almost all foreign schools of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Italian baroque painting of religious subjects, battle painting in manner of J.Courtois, pictures of animals from the school of Roos family, Italian ideal landscape with heroic or idyllic staffage as well as French genre painters and the entire Dutch art from Rembrandt to Van Neer, Dou and Mieris - all of these artistic manners were so deeply absorbed by Dietricy, that he was capable to freely and naturally express himself within each of these styles. Works of Dietricy can be seen in all major museums worldwide.
