Michele Albanesi "Maria Carolina and Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies", important miniature!, 1839

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

Superior quality large miniature on ivory by well-known Italo-Austrian 19th-century portrait miniaturist Michele Albanesi.

According to Saur, Michele (Michaelo) Albanesi was born in 1816 in Naples and died ibidem in 1878 (another source implies that he was born in 1816 in Rome and died in Naples in 1872). Around 1840 he was active in Milan and then in Vienna.
Schidlof calls him "one of the best Italian miniaturists of the middle of 19th century". Similarly, Lemberger and Foster note that he was a good representative of the Vienna School working in the style of Daffinger.

And now a few words about young princesses depicted on this portrait from 1839.
Why princesses?
The marble bust at the terracce with a view of the Bay of Naples (left of the harp) is that of being already nine years long dead father of both girls, Francis (Francesco) I, King of the Two Sicilies from 1825 to 1830. As we will see from latter's biography (our image nr.13) he had with two wives alltogether fourteen children. Seven of them were girls and only two could come in question - aged 17 and, respectively, 19 years (both sitters look to be exactly so old!) Princess Teresa Cristina (1822-1889; from 1843 consort of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil - see our images nr.14-19) and Princess Maria Carolina (1820-1861; from 1850 wife of Infante Carlos of Spain - see image nr.20).
