Carl Ferdinand Stelzner was born in Groemnitz in 1805 or 1806, and died in Hamburg in 1894. He was adopted son of the Flensburg artist Carl Gottlieb Stelzner. At first he worked at numerous German locations as a wandering miniaturist, and is believed to have been a pupil of Eckersberg in Copenhagen. From 1826 to 1827 Stelzner lived in Paris, where he is said to have studied under Augustin and Mme de Mirbel. His miniatures show in fact a strong French influence. After staying in Stockholm and Copenhagen, he lived in Paris for the second time from 1831 to 1834, moving then to London in the same year (1834). There, he married his half-sister Anna Caroline Stelzner who eventually became his pupil and assistant.
Possibly in the following year he travelled to Vienna and Prague. In 1837 he settled in Hamburg, becoming its citizen in 1840. In 1848 the couple divorced, with Stelzner marrying Mlle Henriette Reimers (one of his ex-wife's best friends) in the following year. From 1842, apart from painting miniatures, the artist occupied himself with the daguerreotypes. In 1854 he completely lost his eye-sight; other sources imply it happened in 1862.
Schidlof says, that Stelzner was undoubtedly one of the best German miniaturists of his period.
