Two miniatures on ivory, both of excellent quality, with portraits of female members of a noble French family from the 1780s. One of them is a double portrait showing a middle-aged lady with her elderly mother; the second - portrait of a young woman, respectively, daughter and granddaughter of the two ladies. Both miniatures were painted by the same 1st-class French artist.
In our opinion stylistic criteria of both works absolutely correspond that of works of well-known Paris miniaturist of 2nd half of the 18th century Pierre Chasselat (see our images nr.12-16 with comparisons) and with a very great possibility could be also original works of this artist.

Pierre Chasselat (1753 Paris - 1814 ibidem) was a very renowned portrait miniaturist and graphic artist in Paris in the late 18th and early 19th century. He was a pupil of Vien and exhibited his miniatures and drawings at the Paris Salon in 1793, 1798, 1806 and 1810. He was a "peintre en miniature des Mesdames de France", royal miniaturist who worked for Marie-Antoinette. Schidlof writes: "...he was an excellent draughtsman and a miniaturist of distinction. He is little known because his works are scarce, often unsigned and difficult to recognize since he changed his style several times... Certain works of his early period resemble and are mistaken for those of Pierre Adolphe Hall...".
