# 35805 Michail Yuryevich Lermontov - ??!! "Young Russian Officer /Caucasian War", watercolor portrait, 1830s Price: ON REQUEST (please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union) Painted in the 1830s, it is a watercolor portrait of a Russian "ober-officer" (one of the ranks between ensign and captain) of (probably) the Engineers. He is depicted bearing a cross of Russian Order of St. Anna of 3rd class (just awarded?). In background of the composition we see one of the skirmishes of Caucasian War, set in majestic mountain scenery (the greatest snow-covered formation is the famous Mount Kazbek - compare with our image nr.8). Standing out among other Russian soldiers in the left part of this background scene is a rider in triangular hat - with great possibility our young military officer (for comparison, see our image nr.7), partaking in this combat against Caucasian mountaineers (one of them, wearing a round papakha (Caucasian wool hat), can be spotted in right part of the background scene).
