Originally thought by its previous owner (collector from Dusseldorf, Germany) to be a work of French miniaturist Joseph Tassy (fl. 1785-1835), acquired by us believing it is a work of Louis Lie Perin-Salbreux (1853-1817), this outstanding miniature on ivory (set into a lid of a round box) with portrait of a young gentleman in evening landscape was nonetheless recognized by our friend, world-best specialist in portrait miniatures, Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland) as "a dreamlike work of Mlle Marie-Gabrielle Capet" , well-known French female portrait miniaturist of late 18th century.

Mlle Marie Gabrielle Capet (1761 Lyon - 1818 Paris) grew up in a very humble family, her father being a servant. About 1781 she went to Paris, where she joined the studio of Mme Labille-Guiard, and soon became the latter's friend, assistant and best friend. She exhibited from 1781 to 1785 at the Exposition de la Jeunesse, Place Dauphine, where her talent was soon noticed; in 1785 and 1786 - at the Salon de la Correspondance and, from 1791 to 1814 - at the Salon de Paris. It is only from 1791 that she exhibited miniatures besides pastels and oil portraits, although she had already painted sometime before that date. She did portraits of Mme Elisabeth de France, of Houdon, Mme Labille-Guiard, Suvée, Vincent.
Schidlof writes also: "Mlle Capet was one of the best French miniaturists of the end of 18th - beginning of 19th centuries".

Our images nr.14-21 show several other works of Mlle Marie-Gabrielle Capet that were offered at the international art auction market in the last years.

We are very grateful to Dr. Hofstetter for his generous help.
