Mounted into the same frame, these are three miniatures (very likely previously inset into rings) on ivory with portraits of respectively Empress Maria Theresia of Austria (image nr.2), of her husband's brother Karl Alexander, Duke of Lorrain (image nr.3) and a double profile portrait of Maria Theresia with her consort, Franz I Stephan (image nr.4). All three miniatures were painted by the same artist. They show stylistic criteria of works by famous Swiss pastel, enamel and miniature painter, Jean Etienne Liotard, who was working between 1742 amd 1745 at the Viennese Court. Nevertheless they are not latter's creations, but works of his pupil and travelling companion, working with his master at the Court of Vienna, Jean Adam Serre. To this coclusion came our friend, world-best specialist in portrait miniatures, Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland) who examined this trio during his visit to our gallery in April 2012.
Jean Adam Serre (1704 Geneva - 1788 Geneva) was a painter of miniatures on ivory and enamel; also practiced chemistry and physics. After being his pupil, he became the friend and constant traveling companion of Liotard, whom he helped in his works. His technique resembles Liotard's to such degree that it is not easy to distinguish the works of the two artists (Schidlof).
Sizes range from 1,5x1,7cm/0,6x0,7in to 1,7x1,5cm/0,7x0,6in
We are very grateful to Dr. Hofstetter for his generous help.
