Supreme quality miniature portrait of Kurfuerst (despite erroneous title "Stanislas /King of Poland" on verso) Carl Theodor of Pfalz-Bavaria.

Carl Theodor Kurfuerst (Elector) of Pfalz-Bavaria reigned as Prince Elector and Count Palatinate from 1742, and also as Prince Elector and Duke of Bavaria from 1777, until his death.
Born in Drogenbos near Brussels on 12th December 1724 and educated in Mannheim, Carl Theodor inherited Electoral Palatine (Pfalz) in 1742. As reigning Prince of Palatine, he won the hearts of his subjects by founding an academy of science, stocking up the museum's collections and supporting the arts. When Maximilian III Joseph of Bavaria died in 1777, Carl Theodor became also Elector and Duke of Bavaria and moved to Munich. He never became popular as ruler in Bavaria. Despite the mutual dislike and distrust between him and his Bavarian subjects, Carl Theodor left a distinctive mark on the city of Munich; it was under his reign that the "English Garden", Munich's largest park, was created and the city's old fortifications were dismantled to make place for a modern, expanding city.

On our portrait Carl Theodor is depicted in armour, wearing red sash of Bavarian St. Hubertus Order.

This wonderful small painting was recognized by our friend, wordl-best specialist in portrait miniatures Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland) as absolutely authentic work of well-known 18th century Bavarian court miniaturist Franz Peter Joseph Kymli (our images nr.8-9 provide his extensive biography).
