This miniature portrait is clearly signed "Graff", what as we thought initially indicates that we are dealing with a work of the famous Swiss-German portraitist Anton Graff. Berckenhagen in his Anton Graff's catalogue raisonne (1967) also lists several similiar miniatures on ivory. Nevertheless, the modern specialists in portrait miniatures question Anton Graff's authorship (the latter made only miniatures drawn with silver pencil on whitened parchment) and claim that real author of these, signed "Graff" miniatures on ivory was another Graff whose first name is still unknown. This group of miniatures (including three in our possession) shows strong French influence what could be a sign of artist's long stay (study?) in France. In each case it seems that he worked in different European countries. At 1800 he is mentioned as working at the Wuerttemberg court in Stuttgart.
