Portrait of a young 1st Lieutenant of Hussar Regiment of French Royal Guards from the period of 1824-1830 (regulation of sitter's uniform). Our friend and permanent advisor, well-known uniformologist Dr. Dimitri Gorchkoff examined officer list of this regiment in that period and found only one (!) 1st Lieutenant who was not in possession of any award (ous sitter bears no award!). The name of this officer was Francois Victor Maublanc de Chiseuil. He was born on 23 November 1804 in Paray le Monial, department Saone et Loire, France and died on 29 May 1880 in Saint-Vallerin, Saone et Loire. On 17 September 1840 he married in Lyon Clotilde Antoine Rose Poncet du Maupas (1822-1904). On 12 August 1866, being retired captain of 4th Hussar Regiment he obtained his only award - Chevalier Cros of the Legion of Honour (see our images nr.9-10).

Vincent Bertrand (1770 Paris - after 1818 Paris) regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1796 and 1817. In 1810, in his report of 1810 Salon to Emperor Napoleon I, Baron Denon highly praised Vincent Bertrand, calling him one of the best European miniaturists. Among Bertrand's sitters were members of the family Tascher de la Pagerie (relatives of Empress Josephine), Minister Foucher and Baron Denon.
Works of this artist can be seen in various French and international museums.

We are very grateful to Dr. Gorchkoff for his generous help.
