Johann Friedrich Dietler (1804-1874)-Attrib. "Portrait of a lady in landscape", oil on canvas, ca.1825 10000 EUR Very high quality Biedermeier portrait of a mature artistocratic lady holding a straw hat and Turkish scarf, posing in romantic landscape with river in background. This painting demonstrates absolutely all stylistic criteria of works of well-known 19th century Swiss portraitist Johann Friedrich Dietler and could be with great possibility one of the earliest creations of this artist. Our images nr.12-17 with comparisons convincingly support this attribution. Johann Friedrich Dietler (1804 Solothurn - 1874 Bern) was a son of the Swiss church painter Joseph Felix Dietler.
Initially he studied under Solothurn portrait painter Charles Germann, then in 1822 moved to Paris where he became a pupil of the famous historical painter A. J. Gros. After spending eleven years in Paris, he returned to Solothurn in 1833, and travelled to Italy in the same year. Back in Switzerland in 1835 he settled in Bern and became a teacher at the local art school.
