Joh. Heinrich Schroeder "Prince Anton Radziwill & his wife Luise of Prussia", two important pastels!!

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

This two exceedingly qualitative pastels, initially offered by German auction house "Winterberg", Heidelberg (sale on 12th May 2012 (lot 267)) as a pair of portraits of unknown lady and gentleman from the period ca.1810 (in fact, this information was entirely correct - especially in relation to the lady's dress; see our image nr.22), turned out to be portraits of the famous royal married couple - Prince Anton (Antoni) Henryk Radziwill (1775-1833) and five years his senior wife Luise, Princess of Prussia (1770-1836).
Their double portrait (another pastel painted by Schroeder) housed in the Royal collection of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and showing them ca.10 years prior provides a particularly convincing comparison (see our images nr.1-2; our images nr.14-18 offer extensive biographical information of both persons and show several other portraits of each of them).
Both of "our" pastels are identically sized, originally framed and stemming from the same estate. They demonstrate absolutely all stylistic criteria of works by famous German pastelist of the turn of the 18th century, Johann Heinrich Schroeder and are - as we are certain - his original creations (CLICK HERE FOR OTHER WORKS OF THIS ARTIST IN OUR POSSESSION).

Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757 Meiningen - 1812 Meiningen) was a pupil of J.H.Tischbein in Cassel, made study trips to England, where he portrayed members of the royal family, and to Netherlands. He worked at various German courts (along with others in Hannover and Berlin), in 1785 became royal portraitist of the Duke of Brunswyck, further was a royal painter in Baden. During his late period he lived alternately in his native Meiningen and in Brunswyck. He worked mainly in pastel and was the best German artist of his time using this technique.
