Johann Heinrich Schroeder "Princess Pauline of Lippe", outstanding pastel portait, ca.1795

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

Outstanding quality and very typical for its author, German pastelist Johann Heinrich Schroeder (CLICK HERE for more information about this artist) portrait of ca. 25-year-old Princess Pauline of Anhalt-Bernburg, who after marriage became Princess of Lippe.
She was born in 1769, in Ballenstadt as daughter of Prince Friedrich Albert of Anhalt-Bernburg and his wife Louise of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (the latter died a few days after the birth of her daughter).
On 2nd January 1796 Pauline married Leopold I Prince of Lippe. This portrait was made either shortly before or just afterwards: both the sitter's hairstyle and her dress strongly suggest that the painting was made in the mid-1790s).
After the death of her husband in 1802 Pauline became regent of Lippe and remained in this function during the minority of her son, i.e. from 1802 to her death on 29th December 1820; CLICK HERE for her extensive biography; our images nr.8-9 show two other known portraits of this royalty.

Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757 Meiningen - 1812 Meiningen) was a pupil of J.H.Tischbein in Cassel, made study trips to England, where he portrayed members of the royal family, and to Netherlands. He worked at various German courts (along with others in Hannover and Berlin), in 1785 became royal portraitist of the Duke of Brunswyck, further was a royal painter in Baden. During his late period he lived alternately in his native Meiningen and in Brunswyck. He worked mainly in pastel and was the best German artist of his time using this technique.
