Rare pastel portrait of Princess Amaliie (Amalie Christine Louise) von Baden (1776-1823), never married daughter of Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig of Baden and the Hereditary Princess Amalie von Hessen-Darmstadt (for latter's portrait acquired from the same noble state see our web # 36234). She was the twin sister of Karoline von Baden, future Queen of Bavaria and elder sister of Louise von Baden, future Tsarina Elizaveta Alexeevna of Russia (consort of Tsar Alexander I). Her only brother Prince Karl von Baden became second Grand Duke of Baden later. For she was unmarried her places of residence changed between her sisters Karoline (in Munich) and Elizaveta Alexeevna ( in St. Petersburg; 1801-1809 and 1811-1814) or the residence of her brother in Karlsruhe.

Our images nr. 8-11 provide her extensive biography and show two other portraits of her.
This portrait (and the portrait of the sitter's mother as mentioned above) seems to be a copy of a portrait (made between 1800-1805) by the famous representative of German pastel painting, Brunswyck and Berlin court portraitist - Johann Heinrich Schroeder.
As we will see below, the author of our portrait - Brunswyck pastelist Johann Christian August Schwartz was very much influenced by the works of Schroeder and often copied them (mainly on commissions of the sitters' relatives). Our portrait is probably one of such copies (alike our web # 36234, # 30867 and # 30868) possibly made after a series of Schroeder's portraits of the members of the Royal House of Baden.

Johann Christian August Schwartz (1756 Hildesheim - 1814 Brunswyck) worked in Brunswyck (Braunschweig), Dresden, Hamburg, and exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1800. He was evidently close to Johann Heinrich Schroeder (1757-1812): the attribution of works between them is complicated by the number of pastels signed by Schwartz which are in fact versions of works by Schroeder; many confusions still persist.

Provenance: Baron Egon Ketschendorf, Germany (from property of the same we acquired our web # 36234)
