Joseph Marinkelle was born on 11 May 1732 in Rotterdam as a son of Symon Moorinckel, a Tyrolean born man (who came to Rotterdam from Bozen, South Tyrol) and his Dutch wife. For a long time he worked as a miniaturist and portrait painter in Rotterdam, where he married in 1759. At that time he called himself Marinkel or Morinkel, then in ca. 1768 he started to call himself Marinkelle. In 1767 he was active in The Hague, then settled in Amsterdam where he was a much sought after miniaturist. Due to his small shape he was called the "Miniaturist in Miniature" or "Marinkellje". According to Schidlof he died after 1780 (Dutch sources say "about 1775" or "ca. 1780"). His daughter Maria Adriana was also a portrait miniaturist.
