Wonderful impressionist painting by well-known turn of the 20th century Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Markowicz, painted during his studying years in Paris in 1900/03.
Arthur Markowicz (1872 Cracow - 1934 ibidem) son of a Jewish merchant, studied under Leopold Loeffler, Wladyslaw Luszcz-Kiewcz, Florian Cynk and Jan Matejko at the Cracow Academy in 1886/95. In 1896 he moved to Munich and entered the class of Franz Stuck at the Munich Academy. In the years 1900 to 1903 he lived in Paris, where he was a pupil of Leon Gerome. He also exhibited in Paris at the Salons of 1900, 1901, 1903 and 1904. In 1904 he stayed a few months in Tarnow, then came back to Cracow. In 1907-1908 he was in Jerusalem, in 1910 visited Italy (Florence, Siena, Mentona), from 1911 to 1912 he made trips to Belgium, Holland and visited Vienna in 1915.
In Cracow he belonged to the "Polish Society of Fine Arts" (TPSP) and was a member of "TZSP-Society" in Warsaw from 1925. Besides that he also was Honour Member of the "Jewish Society of Fine Art". He regularly exhibited in Cracow, Warsaw, Lodz, Tarnopel, Katowice, Poznan and abroad in Berlin, Munich, Antwerp, Vienna, Venice etc.
He chiefly painted in pastel technique but also made oil paintings. Works of his can be seen in many Polish and international museums.
