According to the old legend on verso it is a portrait of a certain Mollais, Girondist (member of a political fraction within the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention during the French Revolution - see our image nr.7-8) and resident of Bordeaux. As a Girondist he probably was exempted like many of his comrades in summer of 1793.
Clearly signed "Thoüesny" it is a very important work of the well-known French turn of 18th century miniaturist - Michel Thoüesny.
Michel Thoüesny (1754 Bayex - 1815 Lille; see our image nr.9 with clips of his biography from N. Lemoine-Bouchard) was a son of a merchant. He is mentioned as living in Paris, rue Bourbon - Villeneuve already in 1782. In this year he debuted with his self-portrait and some other miniatures at the Salon de la Correspondance. Schidlof applauds him and says he was inspired by Hall.
