According to information received from our friend and permanent advisor, the well-known uniformologist and author of numerous publications on Napoleonica, Dr. Dimitri Gorchkoff (Moscow), the sitter wears the uniform of a captain of the 1st Semi-brigade of line infantry of the Napoleonic army from the period between 1801 and 1803 (for examples see our images nr.6-7).
In 1792 eleven Swiss regiments in French Royal service joined the new-founded French Republican Army. In September 1799 they were modified to six Helvetian Semi-brigades and in January 1801 to three Semi-brigades. (The 1st Semi-brigade separated together with the 6th, the 2nd with the 4th and 3rd with 5th). In 1803 they were renamed again to Swiss regiments.

We are very greatful to Dr. Gorchkoff for his generous help.
