Karl Karlovich Hampeln-? "Portrait of a gentleman ", high quality Russian miniature, early 1820s

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

Masterful miniature portrait of an unknown Russian gentleman.
He wears civilian clothes according to fahion of early 1820s and bears the neck cross of St. Anna Order of the 2nd Class and the breast cross of St. Vladimir Order of the 4th Class - awards typically conferred either to (retired) military officers or superior members of official hierarchy and unthinkable for a simple private person or low-ranking clerk.
It is a work of a good Russian miniaturist, whose manner resemble this of works by 19th century Russian miniaturist Carl Hampeln (in Russian: Karl Karlovich Gampeln).

Carl Hampeln (in Russian: Karl Karlovich Gampeln) was born in 1794 in a German family living in Moscow. Born deaf-mute (he signed mainly with French addition "sourde-muette" or "sourd-muet"), he studied in Vienna Institute for deaf-mutes, then - at the Vienna Academy of Fine Art. In 1817-1826, he lived in St. Petersburg, where he taught at the School for deaf-mutes; in 1827, he settled in Moscow and remained there until his death, which occurred sometime after 1880.
One of the first Russian lithographers, he was also a fine portrait miniaturist and portrait graphic artist (working with chalks or watercolors), enjoying a broad clientele. He counted among his sitters Russian royalties and many important members of the Russian high society.
Besides extensive biographic information about the artist, our additional images show several other portrait drawings and miniatures of this famous artist.
