Acquired from Austrian noble estate (inventory sale of a castle in Lower Austria) miniature on tin with a portrait of a presumably Austrian aristocrat. His dress and hairstyle speak for 1st quarter of 18th century. This miniature strongly resembles portrait works of the Vienna court artist (pupil of N. Largilliere!) Jacques Schuppen and was made either by latter himself or by one of his pupils at the Vienna Academy.

Jacques (Jacob) van Schuppen was born in 1670 in Paris as a son of engraver Peter Ludwig Schuppen. He studied under his father and his uncle (his mother's brother), the famous French portraitist Largilliere; was friends with Bernard Picart. In 1704 Schuppen became a member of the Parisian Academy. In 1708-1716 he was a Court Painter of Duke Leopold I in Luneville. Invited in 1716 to Vienna, he became there in 1723 a Royal Painter, and, in 1726, was appointed to Director of the Viennese Academy.
