Jacques (Jacob) van Schuppen was born in 1670 in Paris as a son of engraver Peter Ludwig Schuppen. He studied under his father and his uncle (his mother's brother), the famous French portraitist Largilliere; was friends with Bernard Picart. In 1704 Schuppen became a member of the Parisian Academy. In 1708-1716 he was a Court Painter of Duke Leopold I in Luneville. Invited in 1716 to Vienna, he became there in 1723 a Royal Painter, and, in 1726, was appointed to Director of the Viennese Academy.
