Elie Dignat "Henri and Louise d'Artois, Children of Duke de Berry", two importrant miniatures, 1828/30

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

The find of these two of highest quality, painted on vellum miniatures, where each is surmounted with the coat-of-arms of the Royal House Bourbon, is a real sensation! This couple enlarges the widely known group of works of Elie Dignat in Musée Conde in Chantilly (see our images nr. 19-22 ) dedicated to one of our two sitters (all showing him in the same age!). It is the 8-10-year-old, posthume son of killed in 1820 Duke de Berry, Henri d'Artois (1820-1883), Prince of France, Duke de Bordeaux, well-known as the Count of Chambord, from 2nd to 9th August 1830 disputedly being King Henri V of France.
The second miniature portrait shows Henri's elder (one year) sister Louise Marie Therese d'Artois (1819-1864), future Duchess (later regent) of Parma. Our images nr. 23-32 provide extensive biographies of both and show a lot other children portraits of them.

Elie-Antoine Dignat was born in Limoges. He began his artistic career in the early period of the 1st Empire. At the beginning of Restoration he was commissioned by the family d'Orleans to produce a cycle of portraits. He was also responsible for execution of altar decorations during the consecration of King Charles X in Reims (29 May 1825). Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard also mentions his activity as a restorer of manuscripts and book miniatures, especially in the years between 1836 and 1840. He worked in this function in libraries of Louis XVIII and Charles X. Accroding to Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, Elie-Antoine Dignat died after 1840 in Paris.

We are very greatful to the well-known French art expert Mr Xavier Dufestel for his generous help.

Provenance: Auction house "Skinner", Boston, USA, 14 July 2012, Lot 682 (as "pair of probably French miniature portraits of unknown boy and girl")
