This work was acquired at the Auction House Bonhams London on 22 November 2006 (Lot 172) as a "Scandinavian School, ca. 1820".

Of exceptional quality, this miniature on ivory was examined by the world's best expert in portrait miniatures, Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland), upon his visit to our gallery (June 12th 2007). He recognized it as an original work of the well known Swedish miniaturist Lorentz Sparrgren . A comparison with a large number of his works in the Collection of the National Museum Stockholm (see "Illustrerad Katalog över svenska och övriga nordiska miniatyrer", Vol.II) convincingly confirms this expert's opinion!

But who is this young lady, surely a royalty (see her head decoration) ?

Our brief research brought unexpected result - painted, as we are sure, in 1810 (the sitter stayed in Sweden only in this year, and came again only in 1823; besides that dress and hair-style also speak for this date) it is a very rare and extremely important miniature portrait of Désirée Clary (1777-1860), one-time fiancée of Napoleon Bonaparte, who instead him married in 1798 his general, Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763-1844). The latter was elected in 1810 heir to the throne of Sweden; Désirée arrived to Stockholm shortly thereafter, but in a few months returned to France where she spent next thirteen years (our images nr.8-9 show two another (large-scala) portraits of her; CLICK HERE FOR HER EXTENSIVE BIOGRAPHY IN WIKIPEDIA).

Lorentz Lars Svensson Sparrgren (1763 Gothenburg - 1828 Stockholm) was a pupil of P.Hilleström at the Academy of Stockholm (Sparrgen studied there between 1783 and 1788). Later on, the artist left for India and from there to China to learn painting on glass. According to Thieme-Becker, he supposedly devoted himself to miniatures only after his return to Europe. He spent the period between 1796 to about 1803 in Paris. In 1796 he also became an associate member of the Academy of Stockholm, in 1800 - its full member and, in 1810 - one of its teaching professors.
Schidlof writes about him: "Sparrgren was undoubtedly the best Swedish miniaturist of his period. His style is very Scandinavian and is reminiscent of the technique of Domenico Bossi, but one feels there a serious French influence...".
