An extreme rarity at the modern antique market, it is a work of well-known Russian miniaturist of German origin, Martin Karlovich Wagenheim (in Russian phonetic transcription - Vagenheym or Vagengeym).

This miniature was acquired (see provenance notice below) as one of group of Russian miniature portraits, supplied to auction house by living in England heirs of old Russian emigree family - all representing members of Chertkov and Stroganov families or connected with them (through marriage?) persons (see for example our web # 37109).

Martin Karlovich Wagenheim was born in the Duchy Mecklenburg (now Germany). At first he received a dentist education and, soon after finishing his studies, opened his own practice in St. Petersburg. Concurrently, from 1832, he attended St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Art as "volnoprikhodyashchy" (external) student. He graduated the Academy in 1842 with title of "naznacheny" (appointed) artist. Works of Wagenheim were regularly shown at academic exhibitions: "Portrait of artist Frikke" (1842), several miniatures on ivory (1849), portrait of Emperor Nikolai I (1852), watercolor of "Apostle Paul" (1859). The artist died in St. Petersburg in 1866.

Our images nr.9-11 show a few of his miniatures from the museum and private collections in Russia.

Provenance: auction house "Cotswold Auction Company", Cheltenham / England, 4th of June 2013, lot 120

For other Russian miniatures acquired at the same sale, see our web # 37079 and our web # 37072.
