Martin Karlovich Wagenheim was born in the Duchy Mecklenburg (now Germany). At first he received a dentist education and, soon after finishing his studies, opened his own practice in St. Petersburg. Concurrently, from 1832, he attended St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Art as "volnoprikhodyashchy" (external) student. He graduated the Academy in 1842 with title of "naznacheny" (appointed) artist. Works of Wagenheim were regularly shown at academic exhibitions: "Portrait of artist Frikke" (1842), several miniatures on ivory (1849), portrait of Emperor Nikolai I (1852), watercolor of "Apostle Paul" (1859). The artist died in St. Petersburg in 1866.
