Acquired from the same English estate as our web # # 37072, # 37079, # 37090 this superior quality oil miniature portrait shows (according to authentic old inscription on verso) young Evdokia Stepanovna Chertkova, nee Tevyashova, just (as we strongly believe!) after her wedding in 1788 (she was then ca. 18 years old). Another portrait of her (executed several years later) is on display in Voronezhski Museum, Russia (see our image nr.29).
According to genealogical information available through the Web, Avdotia Evdokia Stepanovna Tevyashova was born in ca. 1770 as a daughter of one of Russia's wealthiest landlords, Stepan Ivanovich Tevyashov. In 1788 father married her off to Dmitri Vasilievich Chertkov, son of General-Governor of Voronezhskaya Gubernia. He gave her a dowry of several villages in Voronezhskaya Gubernia with almost 14000 serfs (this number is indicative of only male serfs; one could only make a rough guess of their total number; among these serfs was also the great-grand-father of famous Russian writer A.P. Chekhov - see our image nr.19). Her husband made an excellent state career: he became an actual state councilor and was elected "predvoditel dvoryanstva" (marshal of nobility) of Voronezhskaya Gubernia eight times in a row.
The couple had six children - three daughters and three sons. Two of them became particularly known: Alexander Dmitrievich Chertkov (1789-1858; famous Russian historian and numismatist; in 2012 we sold a miniature portrait of his by P.E. Rockstuhl - see our image nr.13) and his younger brother Ivan Dmitrievich Chertkov (1797-1865; at the apogee of his career, he was the stall-master at the Court of His Imperial Majesty, Tsar Nikolai I; he married Baroness Elena Grigorievna Stroganova, and this connection to Stroganovs explains the fact that both items - presented here miniature and (acquired at the same auction sale) our web # # 37079 - were once property of the same family.
