This round box, made of tortoiseshell with gold mounting, houses in its lid a wonderful portrait of a young aristocratic lady (she is depicted "a la paysanne") in romantic landscape. It is a signed work of well-known French miniaturist André-Melchior Judlin.

While Schidlof refers to him as to "Alexis Judlin", naming town Thann in Alsace as his birthplace (see our image nr.12 on our web # 37406), the more accurate reference can be found in Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard's recently published dictionary of French miniaturists, where she says his real name was André-Melchior Kesler (also Kessler, Koessler) (see our image nr.15 on our web # 37406). He was baptized under this name in Guebwiller (not Thann, but also in Alsace) on 7th January 1742.
As a child he came with his parents to Thann (1749) and studied at the College de Cordeliers. After graduating from secondary school he came to Paris and specialized in portraits, miniatures and engravings. It was in this time that he began using the name "Judlin", under which remained indefinitely his artistic name.
From 1773 he lived in England where he made a spectacular career as miniaturist and, what's more, exhibited between 1773-1776 at the London Royal Academy. Besides that he received a pension from the King of England. He moved then to Continental Europe and worked at various European courts. By 1791 he lived in Paris and took part in Salon exhibitions of 1791 and 1793.
In early 1794 he returned to town of his youth Thann and remained there until he passed away on 6 May 1795.
Works of André Judlin-Kesler can be seen in Museum of Rouen (France), Victoria & Albert Museum (London, UK), Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (USA).
