Friedrich Christian Krieger (1774-1832) "Portrait of a young gentleman", extremely rare pastel!!, 1815
In spite of being one of Germany's most famed portraitists of his time, Friedrich Christian Krieger's pastels are practically impossible to find: neither in museum collections, nor at the currency antique market. Today, there is known only one other (dated 1809) pastel portrait by him, namely that of Adolf Friedrich Theodor Gritzner, housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. (see our images nr.7-8).
Friedrich Christian Krieger (also Krüger) was born on May 23rd 1774 in Zeucha by Forst, Niederlausitz (North Saxony) and died on June 13th 1832 in Dresden. At first, he mastered the profession of a tailor in Cottbus and then for a few years lived in Forst working as one. In 1800 he went to Dresden and studied portrait painting there. He debuted as exponent in 1804 showing a female pastel portrait. In his first period he worked mainly in pastel; later - in oil, painting also portraits and historical scenes. As an itinerant portraitist, he travelled through Bohemia, region of Lausitz (Saxony and Poland); in 1814 he was in Breslau (now Wroclaw in Poland), then - in Posen (Polish: Poznan); in 1815-1817 Krieger lived in Warsaw (the sitter in our portrait, dated 1815, was likely a resident of that city - B.W.), where, apart from pastel portraits and miniatures on ivory, he also produced a number of religious paintings. In 1817, he travelled - via Breslau, Dresden and Thuringen - to Berlin, but then returned to Posen. In 1820, he exhibited in Breslau. Finally, in 1822, Krieger settled in Dresden and remained in that city (with interruptions for portrait commissions in Berlin, Prague, Breslau, Warsaw and Posen) until his death. He regularly exhibited at the Berlin academic exhibitions and in Dresden.
