This high quality miniature bears on verso (i.e. on its backing gilt-metal plaque) an old engraved legend in French that provides biographical data about the sitter. Incidentally, the very same type of legends can be found on miniatures owned by the Princely House Esterhazy: in fact, these inscriptions were all made in the same period (early 19th century) while compiling a new inventory of the Esterhazy Collection.

In our case, the legend informs that one is dealing with portrait of Count Rudolf Palffy, owner of the Castle Bibersburg (CLICK HERE), Lieutenant-General, brother of Count Nicolas (Palffy-Erdöd - B.W.), who was born in 1719. Further, it tells that in 1742 (sic!), he married Eleonore, Countess of Kaunitz-Rietberg. Similarly, the legend informs that he died in 1768.
Our images nr.4-7 show (discovered on the Web) extensive information about this man.

Count Rudolf (Rezsö József Joachim János Vilibald Adorján Judás) Palffy von Erdöd was born in Vienna on March 4th 1719 and died in Pressburg (now Bratislava, Slovakia) on April 1, 1768. He was the youngest son of Count Leopold Josef Palffy (1681-1750) and Marie Antonie Ratuit de Souches (1683-1750). It is also known that he studied from 1732, and that he joined the Austrian military service at a very young age. In 1742, he was already a colonel and, in 1744, became a major-general at the age of mere twenty five. In 1757, he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal and, in 1759, became the Chief (Proprietor) of the 6th Hussar Regiment. In January 1743 (and not "1742", as the legend on verso of the miniature says), he married a four years his junior Eleonore, Countess von Kaunitz-Rietberg (younger sister of famous Austrian statesman, Chancellor Wenzel Anton Count von Kaunitz-Rietberg). The couple had ten children (three sons and seven daughters).
Count Rudolf Palffy-Erdoed passed away in Pressburg (Bratislava) in 1768. He was buried in the crypt of Franciscan Monastery of Malacky by Pressburg. His wife outlived him by eight years; she was later buried next to him.

This miniature demonstrates all stylistic criteria of works by Viennese court miniaturist Lorenzo Balbi.

Lorenzo Balbi (1732 Milan - 1782 Vienna), a Milanese artist, had to leave his home town due to family reasons. He lived from 1770 in Vienna, where he worked at the Court.
