This high quality miniature bears on verso (i.e. on its backing gilt-metal plaque) an old engraved legend in French that provides biographical data about the depicted lady. Incidentally, the very same type of legends can be found on miniatures owned by the Princely House Esterhazy: in fact, these inscriptions were all made in the same period (early 19th century) while compiling a new inventory of the Esterhazy Collection.

In our case, the legend informs that one is dealing with portrait of German-born aristocratic lady, Countess von Hohenzollern, married - Princess Kinsky-Hohenzollern.
She was born on February 24, 1729 in Fribourg as daughter of General Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire, Count Hermann Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Hechingen (1665-1733) and his second wife Eleonore Magdalene, daughter of Margrave Christian Ernst von Brandenburg-Bayreuth.
On September 12, 1749, she married (as the second wife) Franz de Paula Ulrich, Prince Kinsky (1726-1792; CLICK HERE). They had four children (three sons and one daughter).
After outliving her husband by twenty three years, Marie Sidonie died on April 28, 1815.
In this portrait, she is depicted at the age of ca. 30 (her dress and hairstyle suggest the late 1750s).

This miniature demonstrates absolutely all stylistic criteria of works by Viennese court miniaturist Lorenzo Balbi.

Lorenzo Balbi (1732 Milan - 1782 Vienna), a Milanese artist, had to leave his home town due to family reasons. He lived from 1770 in Vienna, where he worked at the Court.

Provenance:
1) Princely House Esterhazy
2) private collection, Germany
