According to the authentic old legend on verso of this miniature, it was painted in 1810 by certain Frick (although this name is not listed in any art reference sources, the high quality of this work suggests he was not an amateur but a professional artist). The legend on verso also provides the name of the depicted woman (she is pictured with her one-year-old son) - Maria Christian Frentz, born on May 17, 1776 in Angelsdorf (suburb of town Ebdorf by Cologne, Germany). She was (from 1808) the "Ehefrau" (wife) of Adam Josef Daniels (1784-1820), who, in his own turn, was a "Landesgerichtsrat" (judge) in Aachen. The couple had one child, son Heinrich Gottfried Daniels (1809-1879; in our portrait, he is depicted as a one-year-old infant). Alike his father, he made a career of a lawyer.
After her husband's death, Mme Daniels remarried to certain Mr. Goldfried, a notary.
This miniature is accompanied by an "Ahnen-Tafel" (English: pedigree; it was handwritten in 1920/30s by one of the sitter's descendants). In it, the names of both sitters - the mother and the son - are supported by genealogical dates (for a corresponding page of the pedigree, see our image nr.9).
Mr. and Mrs. Daniels clearly lived in Aachen - a town, where artist Frick likely lived and practiced portraiture.
