Georg Christof Gottlieb von Bemmel Senior was born in 1738 in Nuremberg as a first son of portrait artist Johann Noah von Bemmel. He studied drawing with his father and Georg Martin Preisler. In 1755 he became a student of Nuremberg Academy, then under the directorship of Johann Justin Preisler. After the death of his father (1758) von Bemmel devoted himself to portrait painting, producing in the following years portraits of all esteemed citizens of his city. Parallel to portrait painting, the artist was also active as painter of battles and (more seldom) as a cityscape artist. He was also a great scholar and writer.
