Size of husband's portrait: 6,1x6,5cm/2,4x2,6in
These two portrait miniatures were previously mounted onto an old tableau with portraits of a certain family. The cutout of the tableau's backing bearing names of the husband and wife from these two portraits is attached here (see our image nr.13). According to this legend, we are dealing with executed in the early 1800s (according to sitters' dress and hairstyle), in St. Petersburg (the author of both pieces, Italo-born artist Pietro de Rossi, was then a permanent resident of this city) portraits of (also) Italo-born merchant from Amsterdam (due to his business staying in the Russian capital) Carlo Antonio Ramperti and his first wife (she died in 1810), Dutch woman Richardina Helena Nobel. Our images nr.14-16 show some genealogical information concerning this couple that we have discovered on the Web. According to this information, Mr. Ramperti was born in 1774, in Venegone, Varese, province Lombardia (then - part of the Austrian Empire). His wife was born in the same (1774) year in Groningen, Netherlands and died in 1810 in Amsterdam. Soon after the latter's death, Mr. Ramperti remarried to her niece - also a Groningen native, Maria Louisa Gockinga (b. 1795). In about 1820, Mr. Ramperti moved to Brazil. He passed away in this country on July 8, 1823 (due to a fatal accident in the Bay of Bahia).
According to T.A. Selinova - the author of monograph "Petr Rossi /Russian miniaturist", Moscow, 2005 - Pietro (Petr Osipovich) de Rossi's exact date (and place) of birth (Rome? St. Petersburg?) remains unknown.
In any case, he was born sometime between 1761 and 1765. His early portraits produced in the end of the 18th century did not survive. Only Schidlof mentions one of his female portraits in Vienna collection Plankenwarth that bears the signature "Pietro de Rossi 1787". In the early 1800s, the artist counted among his sitters royalties and various other significant persons of St. Petersburg's high society. In 1813, Rossi was appointed member of the Imperial Academy with focus on miniature painting. Many of his works were reproduced by engravers and lithographers of his period. He died of cholera in 1831 in St. Petersburg.
