In 1825-1827, he studied architecture and flower drawing at the Vienna Polytechnic Institute, and, from 1831 to 1832, historical drawing at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He showed his works (a.o. watercolor portraits) at the academic exhibitions of 1832, 1834, 1836, and 1837. At first a flower painter, he soon became a popular portraitist in watercolor and miniaturist. From 1837, he lived in Prague, then, in Dresden, where he portrayed members of the Royal Family, among others, future King Johann of Saxe. In 1841, he accompanied his friend, the famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, on the latter's trip to Germany. In the beginning of 1842, he was appointed professor of the Weimar Art School and painter to the court. In 1844, he portrayed in gouache King Willem II of the Netherlands, and was awarded for this work with Netherland's Order of Oak Crown. In 1845, Schramm became a Dr. h. c. of Jena University for the gift of 16 pencil portraits of university professors. In 1848, he briefly lived in his native Teschen.
