Erich Gold (pseudonym Erich Peters/ Erich GOLTZ) was born on May 12th 1899 in Vienna. He studied painting in Berlin from 1920-1923 and afterwards worked as newspaper illustrator and caricaturist, specialising on artist's portraits also using the pseudonym "Erich GOLTZ". 1925 he worked for the newspaper "Il Mattino" in Naples, from 1926 to 1933 he worked for various Berlin newspapers. Being Jewish he then fled to his home country Austria where he converted to Catholicism and continued working as caricaturist and press illustrator. In 1938 he fled through Switzerland to the US where he changed his name to Erich Peters in 1940 and married Viennese-born Lilly Renée Wilheim. He produced comic books (also collaborating with his wife (her artist's name was Lilly Renée) for series like "Abbott & Costello" and "Bingo" and furthermore did artist's caricatures as well as cartoons for American newspapers and magazines.
